How to convince me to take public transportation

19 February 2013 · by  Fr. Ernesto 1 Comment

This is the way to convince me to take public transportation. Unfortunately, from where I live there is no way to take public transportation to work. But, this is certainly one good idea to smooth the ride in.

On a serious note, a big part of the reason why mass transit has struggled in this country are well-intentioned parking space requirements. Such “free” parking makes dense development impractical, and transit needs density to work. Once things are geared in one direction, say auto-centric development, retrofitting things is a huge challenge; after all, it is unjust to allow excessive cars to overflow into other neighboring developments and thereby robbing those places of space for their customers.

The suburban system of building cul-de-sacs that merge into collectors which then merge into high-speed arterials also makes trip distances lengthy, and makes transit impractical as well. Limited efforts are underway to connect cul-de-sacs in order to recreate something resembling a street grid.
