The poem above was written by Walt Whitman about Abraham Lincoln. However, as a veteran, I find myself thinking of every company commander, every sergeant, every leader who has given his/her life for the people in their charge. I have no particular discussion or conclusion to go with this poem. Its meaning is plain and its emotional impact is strong. Memory Eternal to those who have led their own to safety without ever being able to return to home port.
