Some truth to this

The Boondocks

I posted the comic above simply because I got a laugh out of it. The author of the comic actually makes a reasonable point, but you have to think about it a bit.

Most people in the USA do not go to church (or mosque or synagogue) regularly. The Gallup organization estimated that only 39% of people in the USA attend regularly. The percentage of people who never go to church (or mosque or synagogue) is hard to measure because in this culture we tend to want to believe that we have some type of spiritual connection, even if we only go to church once a year.

The character in the second panel, however, answers the question about church attendance in a specific way. The reality is that most people today who do not attend church would not answer that way. They would not try to justify themselves by saying that they, “prefer to follow my own moral code instead of living as a hypocrite.” They would simply look at you at you and say that they could care less about church, or that they go once in a while when they feel like it.

Having the character in the comic justify himself with those words simply points out something about his character, not about why he does not really attend church. The type of answer that refers to the hypocrites back in the churches does indeed mean that you think yourself as being above the rest and somehow more moral. In other words, as the other character replies, “Ah, yes, the Church of Self-Righteousness.”

I quite like that answer.
