Geeky Lagrangian points

6 January 2013 · by  Fr. Ernesto Leave a Comment

The above drawing is a very simplified diagram showing the gravitational forces that are at work between the earth and the moon. As you notice it looks like a topographical map, and in one sense you can conceptually think of it like a topographical map of sorts. If you notice, there are five points, labelled […]

Saint Basil on our responsibility to the poor

5 January 2013 · by  Fr. Ernesto 7 Comments

I am again indebted to a quote on the Preachers Institute website posted by Fr. John A. Peck. You should read the full quote on the website. The harshest form of covetousness is not even to give things perishable to those who need them. “But whom do I treat unjustly,” you say, “by keeping what […]

Pastoral counsel by Saint Basil on sex outside marriage

4 January 2013 · by  Fr. Ernesto Leave a Comment

Recently the Preachers Institute quoted some canons from Saint Basil. A few of them are below: Canon 3. A deacon who commits fornication after his appointment to the diaconate is to be deposed. But, after he has been rejected and ranked among the laity, he is not to be excluded from communion. For there is […]

More soldier suicides than combat deaths in 2012

3 January 2013 · by  Fr. Ernesto Leave a Comment

More soldiers took their own lives than died in combat during 2012, new Department of Defense figures show. The Army’s suicide rate has climbed by 9 percent since the military branch launched its suicide-prevention campaign in 2009. Through November, 177 active-duty soldiers had committed suicide compared to 165 during all of 2011 and 156 in […]

For the mamas among us

2 January 2013 · by  Fr. Ernesto Leave a Comment

This comic brings back memories of being a parent. My wife and I are empty nesters now. While at first many years ago, it was an odd adjustment not having any children around, we have become quite accustomed to not having people dependent on us around all the time. Nowadays we watch our daughters […]

Emancipation Proclamation–150th Anniversary

1 January 2013 · by  Fr. Ernesto Leave a Comment

150 years ago today, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. It was, “based on the president’s constitutional authority as commander in chief of the armed forces; it was not a law passed by Congress. It proclaimed all those enslaved in Confederate territory to be forever free, and ordered the Army (and all segments of […]

First part of fiscal cliff vote taken

1 January 2013 · by  Fr. Ernesto Leave a Comment

About five hours ago the Senate overwhelmingly approved a compromise bill by a huge bipartisan majority. The bill does not take us off of the fiscal cliff, it merely pushes it back a couple of months, as the sequestration clauses are only delayed for two months. However, some of the features are permanent. We will […]
