Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee 2013

22 February 2013 · by  Fr. Ernesto Leave a Comment

O Lord, Thou didst reproach the Pharisee when he justified himself, boasting of his deeds; and justified the Publican when he approached humbly, seeking forgiveness with sighs; for Thou dost not draw near to arrogant thoughts, nor turn away contrite hearts. Wherefore, we also kneel before Thee meekly, O Thou Who didst suffer for our […]

How to convince me to take public transportation

19 February 2013 · by  Fr. Ernesto 1 Comment

This is the way to convince me to take public transportation. Unfortunately, from where I live there is no way to take public transportation to work. But, this is certainly one good idea to smooth the ride in.

When ideals conflict

18 February 2013 · by  Fr. Ernesto 1 Comment

Here is one of the problems with the conflicting arguments being made by some on the very conservative right. On the one hand they are all in favor of energy independence. On the other hand, they are all in favor of the right of the rugged individual to control his own land, his own business, […]

Flash mob creativity — Beethoven 9th Symphony

16 February 2013 · by  Fr. Ernesto Leave a Comment

Sometimes I will see a video and be amazed at the creativity of humans. The video above shows a flash mob, but not your typical flash mob. When I saw it, my heart was lifted. I found myself thinking yet again of the psalmist’s question, “What is man …?” The creativity with which God has […]

Cruise ships and Christian pastors

15 February 2013 · by  Leave a Comment

By now we have all read about the travails of the Carnival Triumph cruise ship. We have seen the photographs of the passangers bunking on the deck, and even of the buckets of human waste in stairwells. Talk about an experience that reminds one of the tales of the Flying Dutchman, except with a much […]

Liturgy is not simply the “work of the people”

13 February 2013 · by  Fr. Ernesto Leave a Comment

Yesterday, I said that we cannot simply look at the linguistic roots of a word in order to understand its current meaning, particularly if the word is a loan word from one language to another language. “Liturgy” is one such example, as I pointed out that we get the word “liturgy” not from its use […]

Liturgy is not simply what we habitually do

12 February 2013 · by  Fr. Ernesto Leave a Comment

It is common to speak of liturgy as though it is little more than what we habitually do, thus on a comment on another website, someone commented: And: is liturgy the same as “form?” Would a Baptist church that still plays hymns and has a set format still be liturgical?I think the answer is yes. […]

Unexpected resignation

11 February 2013 · by  Fr. Ernesto Leave a Comment

In an unexpected move, Pope Benedict XVI has tendered his letter of resignation from the Papacy. This is the only resignation in the modern era, and I believe only the second resignation from the Papacy in the history of the Roman Catholic Church. In his resignation letter Pope Benedict states: "After having repeatedly examined my […]

How insignificant we are

9 February 2013 · by  Fr. Ernesto Leave a Comment

From Psalm 84: 3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, 4 What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? 5 For You have made him a little lower than the angels, And […]
