Just giving back — Buffalo Soldier

30 October 2012 · by  Fr. Ernesto 1 Comment

Today I had another of those VA Medical Centers encounters that warmed the cockles of my heart and left me flabbergasted at the same time. I was walking down the hallway of a Medical Center when I saw a “senior” black veteran with a leather jacket sporting a “Buffalo Soldier” logo, complete with brigade information […]

Westminster Confession of faith and God’s intentions

27 October 2012 · by  Fr. Ernesto 2 Comments

Recently there have been various Congressmen who have been making some odd statements, including some about God’s intentions. On a previous post I had commented that this is why I am not a Calvinist. But, I thought it good to do a small follow up on the issue of Calvinism. You see, one of the […]

When our sin catches up with us

26 October 2012 · by  Fr. Ernesto 4 Comments

If you watch the video of Phil Snider’s speech in front of the Springfield City Council (below), you will see what I consider to be an excellently crafted speech. It is so excellently crafted because of the twist at the end in which he completely reverses direction. Sadly, the reason it hits like a blow […]

One of the reasons I am not a Calvinist

23 October 2012 · by  Fr. Ernesto 7 Comments

Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock said Tuesday when a woman is impregnated during a rape, “it’s something God intended.” Mourdock was asked during the final minutes of a debate whether abortion should be allowed in cases of rape or incest. He replied: “I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, […]

True evangelicals believe only in evolution — NOT

20 October 2012 · by  Fr. Ernesto 9 Comments

One of the most persistent narratives being passed around modern Evangelicalism is that one must deny evolution in order to really be a true “Bible-believing” Evangelical. If one does not believe in six-day young earth creationism, then obviously one is inconsistent in interpreting Scripture and does not really believe in the God of the Bible. […]

Modern ideas of wisdom

18 October 2012 · by  Fr. Ernesto Leave a Comment

The writer of the comic above nailed it. The idea that we can become anything we wish to become (regardless of our talents and personalities) merged decades ago with the idea that each one of us can be an expert (without the need for either advanced education or training, and/or without much experience). That merger […]

Trust me just one more time

13 October 2012 · by  Fr. Ernesto 1 Comment

I was just watching again an old movie called “The Horse Whisperer,”  released in 1998. In the story, both a horse and a young teenage girl (14 in the movie) have been traumatized by an accident in which her friend was killed. The girl lost half her leg while the horse was injured and became unmanageable. […]

Spiritual but not religious, a concern about us

6 October 2012 · by  Fr. Ernesto 2 Comments

“Being spiritual but not religious avoids having to think too hard about having to decide.” So begins a recent article on the CNN religious blog. It is an article that I might have agreed with save that at the same time I read a blog post on Internetmonk.com (a blog by Evangelicals about the “post-Evangelical […]

Want to learn CPR, call a zombie

5 October 2012 · by  Leave a Comment

Father Orthoduck admits that there is nothing theological or particularly Orthodox about the above PSA. But, he enjoyed the Canadian approach to CPR awareness. First the CDC and now the Canadians. Zombies are certainly popular. Make sure you take a CPR course from your local health agency or the Red Cross.
