Roman Catholic bishops call for fasting over healthcare issues

27 June 2012 · by  Fr. Ernesto Leave a Comment

The paragraph below is posted in the website of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops:

The fourteen days from June 21—the vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More—to July 4, Independence Day, are dedicated to this “fortnight for freedom”—a great hymn of prayer for our country. Our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power—St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. Culminating on Independence Day, this special period of prayer, study, catechesis, and public action will emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty. Dioceses and parishes around the country have scheduled special events that support a great national campaign of teaching and witness for religious liberty.

I am sorry that I missed the announcement, because I would have posted it here earlier. Many Orthodox agree with the theme of religious freedom that is the main theme of this fast. And, the Orthodox are already fasting for most of that time, so we would only need to personally extend it by a week if you choose to participate. Let me post below most of one of the recommended litanies. However, please do go to the USCCB website and take a look at all their resources. The fasting and prayer call came as a result of the decision by the health care administration to not allow a broad enough religious exemption in the healthcare law. However, note that the actual litanies, other prayers, etc., include the whole pro-life gamut. This is a good thing and very laudable. So, let’s pray and fast!

Lord, have mercy; Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy; Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy; Lord, have mercy.

Jesus, victor over sin and death… Free our hearts.
Jesus, source of light and hope… Free our hearts.
Jesus, fullness of truth and mystery… Free our hearts.
Jesus, teacher of seeking hearts… Free our hearts.
Jesus, healer of body and soul… Free our hearts.
Jesus, bringer of mercy and justice… Free our hearts.
Jesus, who humble the heart and mind… Free our hearts.
Jesus, release of captives… Free our hearts.
Jesus, voice against violence… Free our hearts.
Jesus, courage for the lowly/downtrodden… Free our hearts.
Jesus, origin of all authority and power… Free our hearts.
Jesus, true lawgiver… Free our hearts.
Jesus, unity of order and passion… Free our hearts.
Jesus, freedom of the Spirit… Free our hearts.
Jesus, obedient Son of the Father… Free our hearts.
