Lybia, the USA, and the United Nations

19 March 2011 · by  7 Comments

Just about six hours ago, United Nations approved forces from several countries began punitive attacks on Lybia to force it to obey United Nations resolutions. USA forces are simply one of several countries involved in the attacks.  The British Armed Forces actually launched many of the Tomahawks and planes that struck Libya. French and British […]

Denial of Service attack

19 March 2011 · by  Leave a Comment

The server which hosts the OrthoCuban blog apparently suffered a severe Denial of Service account with a DNS failure. So, not only this blog, but anything hosted on that service was down. But, we are back.

Dem bones, dem bones, dem miraculous bones

17 March 2011 · by  3 Comments

Can you point to the Scripture which relates the tale that what was contained in an ossuary brought someone back to life? That was the question with which Father Orthoduck left you all. The answer is found in 2 Kings 13: Elisha died and was buried. … Now Moabite raiders used to enter the country […]

Dem bones, dem bones, dem holy relics bones

16 March 2011 · by  2 Comments

OK, It is time for Father Orthoduck to answer the questions from the day before yesterday. Tomorrow, he will make a point with the final answer. What is an ossuary? “An ossuary is a chest, building, well, or site made to serve as the final resting place of human skeletal remains. . . . A body […]

Dem bones, dem bones, dem ossuary bones

14 March 2011 · by  Leave a Comment

As you know, one of Father Orthoduck’s favorite authors is Pithless Thoughts. So, the humorous photograph to the right certainly had Father Orthoduck laughing. But, this brings up the opportunity for me to ask some trivia questions. What is an ossuary? How old is the practice of using an ossuary in Judeo-Christian circles? Are ossuaries […]

Week in review, March 12, 2011

13 March 2011 · by  Fr. Ernesto Leave a Comment

During the last week, I have been in church every day of the week. That has actually been very good, as it has been a very impactful week, and I would have been tempted to make comments that would, perhaps, have not been appropriately Christian. One of the things about a week-long stint as a […]

At the end of the first week of Lent 2011

12 March 2011 · by  Fr. Ernesto Leave a Comment

For those of you who are not Orthodox, what is that first week in Lent like if you follow the OCA parish tradition in the USA? I should mention that the OCA parish tradition in the USA is similar to the traditions in the “Old World.” This will explain to you why those who work […]

First week of Lent worship services

9 March 2011 · by  Fr. Ernesto 2 Comments

As those of you who are Orthodox know, the first week of Lent has eight evening services in a row. As a result, for those of us who are priests and work a secular job, we tend to disappear from the radar. I have tried to keep up posting this week, but I can see […]

Wisconsin Democratic craziness

8 March 2011 · by  2 Comments

Father Orthoduck must admit that the current two major parties in the USA sometimes make me want to say, “a pox on both their houses.” The quote below comes from the Huffington Post, an online newspaper that is far enough to the left that they make almost everyone else look conservative: MADISON, Wis. — The […]

Survival Island — Teacher

7 March 2011 · by  1 Comment

Normally Father Orthoduck does not deal with forwarded e-mails, as they so often are innocuous, or sappy, or untrue, or theologically unsound. But, the e-mail below is both humorous and helps to make a point. Remember that in an earlier post, Father Orthoduck did the finances and showed that a Wisconsin teacher actually makes less […]
