Congresswoman calls for an investigation of Congress

21 October 2008 · by  Fr. Ernesto Leave a Comment

This is an incredible seven minute interview of Republican congresswoman from Minnesota, Michele Bachmann, telling Chris Matthews on MSNBC that the press should start investigating members of the House and Senate to determine which ones are “pro-America or anti-America.” The actual comment comes at around 6:45 into the interview, so you will just have to perseverse.

However, the more startling part is as she is questioned. One can clearly see a viewpoint coming out that is being heard more and more as the campaign is drawing to a close. It is not merely that those with whom she disagree are wrong, but rather that they are actively anti-American. In the first part of the interview she cites the former Weatherman bomber Ayers. Listen carefully as the interview goes through, and it becomes obvious that anyone who holds liberal views is an Ayers waiting to be revealed. At the end, she asks the media to actively investigate Congress itself to determine who is and who is not anti-American.

And, here we come in a nutshell interview to a distillation of the tactics that have been increasingly used during the last decade. One must destroy one’s opponent at any cost. But, there is a danger in that, and we are beginning to see it in many of the Republican rallies. Rhetoric is being shouted by the crowds that shows that these tactics are slowly leading us into a mob mentality. This is very dangerous for this country.

Lest you think I am exaggerating, more carefully “nuanced” talk is being used by Gov. Palin and various spokespeople. They do not speak of pro or anti American, as the Congresswoman did. Rather, they speak of the “real” America. Interestingly enough, they even give geographical delimiters. And, when one follows those delimiters, the “real” American is always Republican. But, that means that big cities are not “real” America. Many suburbs are not “real” America, although some suburbs are. This is a very dangerous move, as it splits American into two parts, encourages hatred and dissatisfaction, and sows seeds that grow into the plants of hatred that even Sen. McCain had to tamp down a few days ago.

Remember that our Lord wants us to sow good deeds and a harvest of righteousness, not these type of tactics.
