Latest scandal numbers watch

Father Orthoduck heard a most interesting statistic today. In the follow-up to the current scandal from the Republican governor of South Carolina, one of the news stations put together some numbers. OK, so how many national-level political sex scandals have there been since President Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinski? Well, spread across both parties, the magic number is 23. Twenty-three politicians... [Read more]

The Old Testament God was a socialist; the New Testament God is a capitalist, part 03

As you can see from the comments to previous posts, there is a very strong reaction in America to posts having to do with economics. So, let’s keep going. The Year of Jubilee The biblical requirement is that the Jubilee year was to be treated like a Sabbatical year, with the land lying fallow, but also required the compulsory return of all property to its original owners or their heirs, except... [Read more]

The Old Testament God was a socialist; the New Testament God is a capitalist, part 02

Now, you may expect me to advocate a particular economic viewpoint from the Old Testament, but I am not. In fact, I may say something that will surprise you. There is no way, with certainty, to support either one economic system or one political system simply from reading the Old Testament, or even the New Testament. But, what one can get is a general sense of what is important to God in both the realm... [Read more]

The Old Testament God was a socialist; the New Testament God is a capitalist, part 01

One of the raging debates in American Christianity today has to do with whether President Obama is a socialist. Much has been written about how God is not against people being rich, therefore implying that any attempt to regulate how people make riches is tantamount to opposing God’s economic policies, therefore it must be sin. Much of the debate over God, riches, and poverty frankly comes from... [Read more]

Moderate frustration

Well, I think I have all the widgets restored. However, to my dismay, over 50% of the posts + comments show some minor corruption. There is no way to fix it other than going over every post and comment individually, something I do not have time to do. As best I can tell, it is almost as though the database program update by the company that hosts this blog converted all my posts from ANSI to ASCII... [Read more]

WordPress crash

For those of you who tried to read this site today and found it either down or trying to send you a file, I apologize. Apparently the wordpress update to 2.8 worked fine until there was a server crash at 2:00 pm. When the server came back up, WordPress decided that it was broken and either gave me a 500 error or tried to download a file to me. Well, without going into all the technical details, I did... [Read more]

On fireflies and the Kingdom of God

On another blog there is a discussion about the Kingdom of God. As we all know, the Kingdom of God was a constant theme in Jesus’ preaching according to the Synoptic Gospels. “The Kingdom of God is at hand.” “The Kingdom of God is among you.” Even to the last, when Jesus stands before Pilate, he speaks of the Kingdom when he says to Pilate that his Kingdom is not of... [Read more]

Israeli / Palestinian connundrum

The editorial cartoon above was created by David Horsey. But, when Father Orthoduck saw it, it reminded him of an ongoing morality study online. In typical psychology fashion, the designers of the questionnaire put it together in such a way that the people who responded did not know what the researchers were testing until the questionnaire was over. And, the results were basically as above. Both... [Read more]

A Baptist view of Orthodox worship

Below is a post from the website “Real Live Preachers.” I hope you enjoy it. It was most helpful to me to read an outsider’s evaluation. It brought many memories to me. But, it does point out what part of the pull of Orthodoxy is. Not for Lightweights Mon, 06/01/2009 – 16:48 Last Sunday was the 4th of 13 in my sabbatical time. Each of them is precious to me. Each week I am... [Read more]
